This is not part of the kickstarter,
this gear is behind the clutch basket,
and works with the electric starter circuit.

Starter Reduction Gear Repair Kit -

If your starter kicks out when engaged, or makes a rattling sound
& will not engage, the problem is usually the teeth on gear that
engages with the one on the crank has worn out.

The problem is actually not in the starter motor,
but in the drive-train system to the crankshaft,
like an automotive bendix drive.

This repair kit is the solution!

Kit contains:
1pc. 447-15516-00 Gear 4 (Starter gear),
1pc. 90468-29062 Clip - (Spring clip for starter gear),
1pc. 90501-15409 Spring, compression - (starter gear spring).

NOTE:
(I usually reuse the old spring,
as this part is rarely an issue,
and often feels stiffer than the
replacement spring provided)

This gear assembly is located behind
the leading edge of the clutch hub, and is relatively easy to change.

NOTE: (Clutch cover & clutch hub assembly removal is necessary,  -about an hour for your first time).


note:
i don't even drain the oil anymore, .....
(unless it needs an oil change anyway!!!...lol!)-
i just lean the bike far enough over to the left side,
and remove the clutch cover- the oil stays in the motor!! easy~!

if you do a full oil change,
DON'T FORGET TO REMOVE THE
very bottom SUMP COVER
(where the 2 large drain plugs are-not the right side filter)
AND INSPECT YOUR OIL SUMP PICKUP FILTER ELEMENT-

if it has never been changed,
and the bike has over 10,000 miles,
I guarantee that it is broken,
and you will visually see the screen torn-
allowing unfiltered oil into your oil pump and engine......

this upgraded oil filter is the cheapest,
#1 best upgrade for any XS650!!!!!

SPECIAL NOTE:
check the condition of the gear that this mates with!
If it is worn/damaged, then this part won't fix the problem.

If the gear does not engage after installation:
 something to try: the starter gear clip may need to be
squeezed and tightened, (there must be enough resistance in order to engage
and travel down the worm gear).  So remove the clip from the gear,
put it in a vice or secure it someway, and squeeze it together,
to increase the spring tension on the gear.

SIDE NOTE:
I usually reuse the old thin gauge coil spring, (the separate spring shown in the pic)as this part is rarely an issue,and often feels stiffer than thereplacement spring provided.Pick whichever one is firmer.-----------------------------------------------
